The last August 19th was the beginning of this amazing experience when all my feelings were sometimes energetic because of the changes I was living. That morning I woke up in my home where I was born in my home country, and at the end of that day, when I took the plane, I arrived and departed to NYC, I was in an unknown city for me. The first days were like the most impressive days for me, because everything was different, also the culture of people.
Being in a new city is like starting from the beginning in almost all aspects; definitely, one of these is public transport. The first day I got lost for almost 5 hours Jajaja, don’t expect that it will be easy, look at youtube videos about how works public transport before moving to your new destination :). My recommendations are, guide yourself with videos, if you move without a sim card and data plan, download: the maps of the new city where you’re moving with Google Maps using the option ”Offline maps” that really helpful and download from google images the whole subway system line of the city where you’re moving, you can print it also.
Staying in a place, I recommend during the first days being in a hotel the first days, and after that, you can move to an Airbnb for a time while you adapt yourself to the system and most important, while you complete many things that you have you make in the city where you’ll be. In my case, I stayed in these two places while I was completing many things, for example: getting a social number, opening my bank account, and other things that you will be involved when you be here, then don’t think too much about these things before arriving in your new destination.
Locals, this can be the most amazing thing, and at the same time, you will realize that you will take some time to be adapted to them. I’m Latin-American, and sometimes I feel that the New Yorkers (in my case) are totally different from me, and at the same time, I think that there are a few things that they feel comfortable about me and my Latin culture. Definitely, I already figured out that there are things that I have to modify about myself, but all these are part of the adaptation process that I really love. The new locals undoubtedly are the most beautiful thing you’ll experience in your new destination. I wish you the best :)!
