October is probably one of the best months for architects, designers and other related professions to be around the city.

During this month there are lots of design events going on, and if you have the chance to join them, you definitely should. There are new products presented, new materials, designs, and it is the perfect chance to learn more about other professionals that work in the same sector as you do. There are also some design firms and some vendors that organize meetups after work so you can enlarge your contact network. One thing is for sure; you are going to run into the word RSVP quite often during this month, so you would better get familiar with it. Also be ready to have your inbox overtaken with emails. October is a very interesting but also an intense month.

Among all the events, there are probably two of them that I would like stand out and that are opened also to people that do not necessarily need to be in the design industry.

On the one side, there is the Architecture and Design Film Festival. During some days of the month there is a cinema in the city that shows architecture-related movies that are really interesting. I had the chance to watch two of them and they were both very good and very instructive. Maybe I was just lucky and I picked the right ones, but I was very pleasantly surprised and I would fully recommend it.

On the other side there is another big event which is the Open House New York. This event takes place in many cities of the world and I was curious to see how it was in New York with so many interesting buildings around the city. I was so excited that I decided to offer myself as a volunteer and be part of the event. I was not disappointed, it was the best decision I could have made. To see this event from the inside is really interesting. It takes place during a weekend in October, and during these days there are a lot of buildings that are opened to the public with guided tours and events. Some of them are usually closed to the general public during the rest of the year so this is a perfect chance to get inside and explore them. Most of them are with open access but other need a previous booking. If you are interested in visiting one of those, you need to be really fast as they get all sold out in a matter of minutes, literally. You should set an alarm, get a fast computer and go for it!

New York is a big city with people from every single corner of the world. It is the best place to broaden your mind and find some inspiration. You can find a wide variety of new ideas and new concepts that you may have never heard or thought about. It is the perfect place to be up to date with the latest news and to see what is happening around you.
