Survival guide New York – Part 4 – The world of entertainment

Hello everyone!

Who hasn’t heard of a Broadway musical or the opera at the Met? Today I am going to talk to you about another cultural offer that is in high demand in New York City, the world of entertainment.

Times Square is what many call the heart of Manhattan, as it is always full of people, music or shows and no matter the moment of the day, it will always be illuminated. It is named after The New York Times and dates back to the beginning of the last century, when the newspaper moved its offices to a new skyscraper built on 42nd Street.

If you are thinking about seeing a Broadway show, there are several alternatives that are a bit cheaper than buying them directly on their website, which usually does not go below $100 per person:

  • First of all, it is possible to find same-day seats with discounts of up to 50% at the TKTS box office, located at the intersection of 47th Street and Broadway under the grandstands.
  • Secondly, you could play the lottery for the next day. Usually, prices are between $30 and $50, which is quite cheap for a Broadway show, and you can win up to two tickets. It usually works, I won tickets a couple of times, you just have to insist a little. To participate you just have to access through this website: https://lottery.broadwaydirect.com/ You can also find many shows on the https://www.todaytix.com/ website.
  • Third, you can participate in the ‘Broadway Week’. This is a couple of weeks a year where they offer 50% off tickets on shows that are not normally discounted, such as The Lion King. It is usually held in the off-season in September and January, and tickets go on sale a month in advance. All you have to do is add the 2×1 ticket code that they give on their official website, just keep in mind that at the end of the purchase they will add a $20 handling fee per person.

Also, if you are interested in dance, music, theater, opera or film, do not hesitate to visit Lincoln Center. It is a complex dedicated to the performing arts where a wide variety of shows are performed daily. Many of them are performed outdoors, in addition to offering many free and on a pay-what-you-want basis. Moreover, the opening days of a new show tickets are usually discounted and you can find them for even $10. There are also often very interesting exhibitions open to the public, here is their website to keep abreast of all their news: https://www.lincolncenter.org/home

Another of the many possibilities to listen to live music in Manhattan is to go to Carnegie Hall. This is one of the most famous places in the United States for both classical and popular musicians. They usually have quite a few shows and if you have a student card the tickets can even go for 10$.

If you like the outdoors, at the High Line you can see concerts, guided tours, free talks, flea markets, sketches, poetry, tai chi and much more. Here is their website with the calendar of activities: https://www.thehighline.org/events/?pages_loaded=3

Finally, we can not forget the famous New York Comedy shows, where a comedian faces a microphone in front of a brick wall. The most famous place to enjoy this show is ‘Comedy Cellar’ but you can find many other places where they offer comedy shows.

I hope you liked this post and that you can now enjoy all the cultural offerings of New York much better.
