From Zurich to Los Angeles: My J-1 Journey to Morphosis

I’m Sergio, an architecture student from Zurich, joining Morphosis Architects in Los Angeles as an intern. I study at ETH Zurich, where my work focuses on contemporary urban conditions, adaptive reuse, and the interface between technology and design. I’ve gained experience across model making and plan production and worked as a teaching assistant, which sharpened my precision, coordination, and communication.

Before starting the visa process, I expected it to be slow and unpredictable. I worried about timing—synchronizing university schedules, the internship start date, and the paperwork—imagining weeks of back-and-forth and last-minute surprises.

My host company, Morphosis, recommended Architect-US to me. From the first conversation, the process felt structured and transparent. They laid out each step, helped me prepare and review documents, and anticipated the small details that often cause delays. Their guidance turned what I expected to be a maze into a clear path.

The embassy appointment itself was very smooth—they didn’t ask any questions at all. I arrived with everything organized exactly as advised, and the interview was over almost immediately.

I received the offer at Morphosis after sharing my portfolio and speaking with the team earlier in the year. The fit was evident from the start: a research-driven culture, rigorous design, and the opportunity to work at a scale that challenges and expands my skills.

From the American experience, I hope to learn how large, complex projects are coordinated across disciplines; how design intent carries through to detail, fabrication, and construction; how to communicate ideas clearly to clients and collaborators; and how the pace and iterative culture of a top U.S. studio pushes both technical mastery and creative risk-taking. Living and working in Los Angeles will also challenge my European assumptions about urban form and infrastructure, enriching my perspective as a designer.

Looking back, what I thought would be a long and complicated visa journey proved efficient and calm with the right support. I’m grateful to Architect-US for the clear guidance and to Morphosis for the recommendation, and I’m excited to bring what I learn in the U.S. back to my future work.
