Art Deco in SF

This month has been quite busy at the firm as we had quite a few deadlines. Challenging time constraints, but always an opportunity to grow as a trainee. The process of creating the sets and preparing for the review helped me gain valuable experience.
One weekday, however, I had the pleasure of discovering a hidden architectural gem in San Francisco. It happened during a routine doctor’s visit at 450 Sutter St, which was designed by the prominent architect, Timothy L. Pflueger. He was a master of the Art Deco style, and he played a significant role in shaping San Francisco’s architectural history during the early 20th century. He was responsible for many iconic buildings in San Francisco, including the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company Building and the Paramount Theatre. He was also known for his collaborations with famous artists, such as Diego Rivera and Ralph Stackpole, who contributed murals and sculptures to his buildings. The building at 450 Sutter St is one of Pflueger’s most significant works. Completed in 1929, the building served as a medical and dental center for many years. It is now home to several offices and businesses.
As I walked through the building, I found myself captivated by the intricate details motifs. The lobby, in particular, was a sight to behold. The terrazzo floors, bronze elevator doors, and ornate ceiling murals all reflected the elegance and sophistication of the Art Deco period. As I left the building, I was struck by how many hidden architectural gems are scattered throughout San Francisco. It was a reminder of the city’s rich history and the many influential architects who have left their mark on its landscape. I felt grateful for the chance to discover such a beautiful building on such a random day and to be reminded how precious it is to live in a city with such a strong architectural heritage.
