ROCKAWAY IN WINTER

One of my favorite (and affordable) getaway: the beach in the winter. Either because my hometown is near the ocean and I miss it or because I sometimes just need to get out of the crowd, L-Train drives me to the peaceful side of New York (though I recommend cycling when warmer!)

I first went to Rockaway Beach back in September, when I just landed in the city. From Williamsburg it took us around 2 hours to get there by bike, crossing all Brooklyn down and the amazing bridge that connects the beach with the mainland. From this point, one can start filling his lungs with fresh sodium. We jumped directly into the Wise Clock, the hotspot for the beach party. In summer this place is full of life (sometimes too much life!). We soon left the crowd behind us and headed to the Rockaway Point. Coming from the Canary Islands, I was surprised by the beauty of this place.  Miles and miles of sand and forest and silence.

I’ve heard many good things of surfing in Rockaway, mostly in winter and with hurricane weather. I didn’t bring my board, but I know a couple of places to rent all the equipment (a warm suit please!!). Still feeling cold? Want to get into the mood? Check this out:

In the days that is just flat and freezing, I do love standing by the shore looking into the horizon. The view, the smell, and the sound of the ocean are my intimate connection with home.

Merry Christmas
