HKS has completed the Astra Tower, a 41-story residential skyscraper in downtown Salt Lake City that has become the tallest building in Utah. Beyond its height, the project stands out for its LED crown designed to communicate air quality in real time, reinforcing the relationship between architecture, technology, and urban responsibility.
The tower combines GFRC and glass-clad volumes with exterior terraces and an open roof illuminated by LEDs that change color based on pollution data. Using its own sensors and references from the EPA and NOAA, the building translates environmental information into an accessible visual language, integrating itself into a local architectural tradition that informs and dialogues with the city.
