The Swiss studio Karamuk Kuo has designed the expansion of the Rice School of Architecture in Houston, creating the William T Cannady Hall for Architecture. The building, with glass and terracotta facades, features linear forms that slide and glide, integrating into the historic quadrangle of the campus and dialoguing with the original MD Anderson Hall building, dating from 1947, and its renovation in the 1980s.
Covering 2,044 square meters, the extension surrounds a mature tree and respects elements of the terrain, combining structure on existing arcades with cantilevers supported by beams. The design, the firm’s first in the United States, reflects a contemporary style that enhances architectural production, research, and exhibition, while maintaining a link to the history of the site.
