Following the fire that destroyed the Doris Duke Theater in 2020, Mecanoo Studio has rebuilt the space on the Jacob’s Pillow campus with a deeply respectful approach to indigenous traditions. Located on a sloping site, the new building combines a main stage, lobby, offices, gallery and a rear garden, all wrapped in a double-height timber structure.
The design follows the principles of Medicine Wheel orientation, with the cardinal points as organizational axes. Clad in heat-treated pine and built with Canadian CLT panels, the theater reflects an integration between architectural innovation and respect for the environment and the indigenous worldview.
