{"id":9656,"date":"2018-09-27T16:09:32","date_gmt":"2018-09-27T15:09:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.architect-us.com\/blog\/?p=9656"},"modified":"2018-09-27T16:09:32","modified_gmt":"2018-09-27T15:09:32","slug":"admiring-the-view-csh-22-the-stahl-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.architect-us.com\/blog\/2018\/09\/admiring-the-view-csh-22-the-stahl-house\/","title":{"rendered":"Admiring the View: CSH #22 &#8211; The Stahl House"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Living and working in <strong>Los Angeles<\/strong> presents many great adventures and opportunities, but for this blog post, I\u2019ll be talking about what may possibly be my favorite: fulfilling a childhood dream with a visit to the<strong> Stahl House<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>As mentioned in an earlier blog post, one of the early images that really sparked my interest in architecture was Julius Shulman\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/la.curbed.com\/2016\/11\/22\/13709668\/time-magazine-stahl-house-juliu-shulman-case-study-22\">classic shot of the Stahl House<\/a>. The excitement and intrigue that this photo evoked within me as a child still rings true as an adult and so it was with great joy that I headed off into the Hollywood Hills to take up my place on a private tour of the property.<\/p>\n<p>Designed by the architect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.laconservancy.org\/architects\/pierre-koenig\">Pierre Koenig<\/a> and built in 1959, the <a href=\"https:\/\/stahlhouse.com\/\">Stahl House<\/a> is an iconic representation of 20<sup>th<\/sup> Century LA modernism. Adopted into <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsandarchitecture.com\/\">Arts &amp; Architecture Magazines\u2019<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dwell.com\/article\/a-look-at-10-iconic-case-study-houses-in-california-abb9ca3c\">Case Study Program<\/a> as <strong>\u2018<em>CSH No.22<\/em>\u2019<\/strong>, the house was remarkably ahead of its time, combining a cantilevering structure with huge spans of glass that at the time were the largest pieces commercially available. The vision was for a mostly glass house, without walls blocking the panoramic views of <strong>LA<\/strong> and the result certainly does not disappoint.<\/p>\n<p>Visits to the house can be arranged via the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stahlhouse.com\/tours\/\" target=\"_blank\">website <\/a>with tours taking place three times a day on Wednesdays, Saturdays and every other Friday.
