After more than a year and a half living in New York City<\/strong>, I\u2019ve realized that the city completely changes the way you understand space. Coming from places where homes and daily life often feel more spacious, adapting to New York\u2019s compact lifestyle was challenging at first. Over time, though, I started seeing small spaces not as limitations, but as opportunities for thoughtful design<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In New York, every inch matters. Apartments are organized with incredible efficiency, furniture often has multiple purposes, and storage becomes part of the architecture itself. Living in these conditions makes you much more aware of how people move through spaces and how design impacts everyday life. As an architectural designer, this experience has changed the way I observe and think about architecture<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

What I find most interesting is how people still create warmth and identity within very small apartments. A studio can become a bedroom, office, dining room, and living space all at once. Instead of feeling incomplete, these spaces often feel intentional and highly personal. The city reflects this same mindset architecturally through vertical living, adaptive reuse, compact floor plans, and creative spatial solutions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Living in New York has also shifted the way I approach design professionally. I\u2019ve become less focused on size and more interested in precision, flexibility, and functionality. Small spaces demand careful decisions regarding circulation, light, proportion, and storage. They force designers to prioritize what truly improves the user experience.<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the biggest lessons New York has taught me is that good architecture is not defined by square footage. A well-designed small space can feel more meaningful and efficient than a much larger one. In many ways, learning to live in New York is also learning how architecture can respond creatively to density, affordability, and the realities of urban life.<\/span><\/p>\n
