Edmonds + Lee Architects<\/strong> is a full-service design, development, and architecture firm based in San Francisco\u2019s Mission District. Partners Robert Edmonds and Vivian Lee\u2014who met at Columbia University\u2019s Graduate School of Architecture, Preservation, and Planning\u2014integrate a profoundly philosophical approach with a deep well of on-the-ground building experience to produce work that explores light, space, plane, material, and the endless possibilities of form.<\/p>\n

Their work is ethereal and material, equally grounded in real-world concerns like budget and local rental markets as in conceptual concerns like duality, the power of a flush of recognition, and intimacy. Night and Day House<\/strong><\/a><\/h4>\n

This renovation of an old craftsman home challenged the architects to weave together the old and the new, to bring out the threads of architectural tradition while maintaining the architectural clarity of the modern addition. Two vertical elements \u2014 a stair that connects all three floors of the project, and a wall extending down from the cantilevered addition of the owners\u2019 suite \u2014 ground the project, literally and figuratively, deeply in its site. The wall acts as a hefty, solid column, anchoring with its mass, while the stair\u2019s open treads render it a lightwell for the house\u2019s lower levels, helping the most ephemeral part of the site, its light, seep into every space.<\/p>\n

The stair was conceptualized as a hinge, both marking the joints between floors and bringing together the traditional craftsman architecture on the street side of the house and the sleek, modern spaces in the back. An honesty of materials undergirds the new design, whose sleek, white interiors are punctuated with swaths of warm oak and Carrara marble. In the kitchen, a large central island of thick, weighty timber recalls the craftsman tradition that runs through the home\u2019s veins.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

Grove Street Residences<\/strong><\/a><\/h4>\n

Located in the heart of Hayes Valley, 311 Grove is a boutique residential building that both engages with the historic district on multiple fronts and provides a protected semi-urban space within, in the form of an interior courtyard that provides refuge in an otherwise bustling environment.<\/p>\n

Given the size constraints and through-block nature of the parcel, Edmonds + Lee developed a scheme in which the building has two main masses with facades on Grove and Ivy Streets, with an internal courtyard carved out in the center to allow light to flood all the interior spaces. The courtyard serves as common outdoor space, as well as housing an open stair that serves as a major part of the main circulation system. That stair brings a vibrancy and liveliness to the courtyard, integrating it with the natural rhythm of life in the building.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Edmonds + Lee Architects was commissioned to design all public spaces\u2014including rooftop solarium, lobby, lounge, spa, and gym\u2014 as well as all the units, for this new luxury rental building. This is the first San Francisco multifamily project to be developed by Hines. Produced in collaboration with award-winning firm Arquitectonica, 33 Tehama sets a new standard for urban high-rise living. We designed generous amenity spaces featuring top-of-the-line finishes targeted specifically towards discerning San Franciscans.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
