How do you tell your story?<\/p>\n

We get this question from our community all the time, especially when practicing presentations and interviews. In this article we explore four strategies for every portfolio that will help you use the language to communicate your story in a way that connects with your audience.<\/p>\n

Remember! A portfolio is a story about your work and how you have grown through every experience. You must be showing the audience those moments in your career that define how you can add more to the hiring firm. Your portfolio showcases your problem-solving abilities and how you reflect upon your successes and failures.<\/p>\n

1. Highlight your top values<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

What words and images come to mind when you think about what you value most as a designer? Innovation, creativity, seamless integration between landscape and building, design excellence, meticulous detailing? <\/span><\/p>\n

Choose 3-5 words<\/u><\/strong> and make sure there is at least one image for each of these words spread across different projects that helps to demonstrate these values. <\/span><\/p>\n

2. Best work goes first<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Curate 5\u201310 projects that align with the kind of work you want to be doing and the work of the architecture practices you like. Clarify what your audience seeks by checking for keywords (verbs and adjectives) in the job description and their website and accentuate how your expertise, skills and uniqueness exceed their needs. Strive for flexibility and tailor what you show to the people viewing it. <\/span><\/p>\n

Remember, respect the time and attention of your audience. Go deep on a few, broad on the rest \u2014 quality is what matters. <\/span><\/p>\n

3. Understand the story you want to tell\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>before telling it<\/h3>\n

The story and narrative you tell in your portfolio can be as important as the work itself. Consider how your motivation, aspirations shape these narratives, what is highlighted or omitted from the content of a project, which contributes to it (i.e., designers\/engineers), why I chose this particular project for inclusion \u2014 all have an impact. Consider all these points when you’re preparing your portfolio: <\/span><\/p>\n
