SOM<\/strong><\/a> is a collective of architects, designers, engineers and planners working together to build a better future. Their firm, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM)<\/strong>, is responsible for some of the world\u2019s most technically and environmentally advanced buildings and significant public spaces. Their approach is highly collaborative, and their interdisciplinary team is international. Working from a network of creative studios across the globe, they are able to apply international expertise at a local level.<\/p>\n

SOM<\/strong><\/a> believes that design is about more than meeting people\u2019s needs\u2014it is the art of realizing their aspirations and changing the way they experience the world. The best results come from a balance of disciplines: planning, interiors, engineering, and architecture. This total design approach means seamless coordination, from the dynamic initial design stages to the pride in seeing users inspired by the end result.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Urgent environmental and social challenges place a greater emphasis on engineering solutions than ever before. The principle of architects and engineers working together is integral to SOM<\/strong>‘s culture. It allows them to focus their energies and to use resources economically. By understanding what is possible, they can achieve the seemingly impossible. Together, we can shape the future, by applying creativity and emergent technologies to design buildings that anticipate new ways of living, working and learning.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

One of the key areas that SOM\u00a0<\/strong>focuses their resources on is the development of young architects and designers from around the world. The key endeavor that facilitates this goal is the SOM Foundation<\/strong><\/a>, which was founded in 1979<\/strong> with the goal to advance the design profession\u2019s ability to address the key topics of our time by bringing together and supporting groups and individuals, each with the highest possible design aspirations. The Foundation\u2019s award programming<\/strong> was established in 1981<\/strong> and currently offers five annual awards across the United States<\/strong>, the United Kingdom<\/strong>, and China<\/strong>. The awards support students and faculty of architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, and engineering to undertake rigorous interdisciplinary research that can help shape our future.<\/div>\n

Architect-US<\/span><\/a> J1 Visa Participants<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Eftalia Proios Torras<\/strong><\/a><\/h4>\n
Eftalia<\/strong> is a wonderful Young Spanish Architect that was able to leverage her experience working at SOM<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>as a J1 Visa Exchange Participant to then apply for the\u00a0O1 Visa<\/strong> and win it to go back to the same studio she worked at in Washington, DC<\/strong> with SOM<\/a><\/strong>. Before that initial experience in 2016,\u00a0<\/strong>she had been taking on various internships in Barcelona<\/strong> at Ramon Sanabria Arquitectes Associats<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Estudi d’Arquitectura Toni Giron\u00e8s<\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n

After returning to Barcelona<\/strong> from her first work experience at\u00a0SOM,\u00a0<\/strong>she continued working on her Computer software skills and became a BIM Specialist<\/strong> at Pine Arq<\/strong><\/a> for a year. Now she is back in\u00a0Washington DC<\/strong> as a Senior Architectural Designer<\/strong>. Every step of the way since 2016<\/strong> we have been there with her, assisting with opening the necessary doors for her to succeed and apply her true potential to a top firm.<\/div>\n

Esteban Becerril Pellon<\/strong><\/a><\/h4>\n
Esteban<\/strong> is another top notch Spanish Architect that was able to join the\u00a0Architect-US Job +J1 Visa Program<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>and attain an incredible opportunity working with <\/span>SOM<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>in\u00a0<\/span>Washington DC.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/strong>Before that he had the chance to intern for 3 months at a firm in in\u00a0New York<\/strong> called\u00a0<\/span>APT Architecture<\/strong><\/a>. <\/span><\/span>He was also able to win the\u00a0<\/span>O1 Visa<\/strong> through our partner sponsors, and extend his American Dream.<\/span><\/div>\n

Since returning from the USA<\/strong> in 2018, Esteban<\/strong> has started his own studio called Becerril Studio<\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong>He has always dreamt of starting his own firm back in\u00a0Spain<\/strong>, but he is grateful for the opportunities he was able to take advantage of in the USA<\/strong>. According to\u00a0Esteban<\/strong>, it provided him with the necessary exposure to a variety of styles and techniques of running a firm to be able to be dynamic and adaptable as an entrepreneur.<\/div>\n
