{"id":20818,"date":"2019-08-25T13:55:17","date_gmt":"2019-08-25T11:55:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.architect-us.com\/blog\/?p=20818"},"modified":"2021-04-09T13:55:40","modified_gmt":"2021-04-09T11:55:40","slug":"how-to-clean-up-your-social-media-presence-to-perserve-your-professionalism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.architect-us.com\/blog\/2019\/08\/how-to-clean-up-your-social-media-presence-to-perserve-your-professionalism\/","title":{"rendered":"How to clean up your social media presence to perserve your professionalism?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 65\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>To start, your profile photo should be a close-up and you should be alone.<\/p>\n<p>Your photo should aim to <strong>elicit an emotion<\/strong> \u2013 sympathy, respect, admiration, etc. You are seeking to create a sense of <strong>professionalism<\/strong>, so a blurry photo will not work!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 65\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<h4>Profile Photo<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Expressions:<br \/>\n\u2022 To inspire respect \u2013 deliberate relaxed face + intense eye contact.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To inspire trust \u2013 slight smile + eyes\u00a0looking to the side.<\/li>\n<li>To inspire admiration \u2013 friendly smile + gaze into the camera.<\/li>\n<li>To inspire sympathy \u2013 a laugh + eyes elsewhere and slightly closed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The person in the photo should look like you. Like you now, not 10 years ago. Don\u2019t fear your age \u2013 with it comes wisdom or so I\u2019ve heard!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h4>Information<\/h4>\n<p>In <strong>LinkedIn<\/strong>, you don\u2019t have those design disasters that occur if you have a creative CV and want to change anything. This means there\u2019s no reason not to have your information up-to-date.\u00a0Include every work experience (even if it wasn\u2019t a paid position) and if you don\u2019t have much relevant experience, include all other ones. Check your grammar, punctuation, and spelling. If your English is not that good, ask someone whose is to revise it. There\u2019s no shame in asking for help.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t create a section for just one thing. If you have 1 volunteering experience, even if it\u2019s great, it means creating a whole section for \u201cVolunteering\u201d. That makes your profile seem larger but not with content, and that could be a problem.<\/p>\n<p>Make sure you always talk in first person or neutral!<\/p>\n<h4>Recommendations<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 66\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>Many managers judge people they don\u2019t know by their recommendations \u2013 both the ones they\u2019ve received and those they\u2019ve given. The truth is it\u2019s hard to get recommendations, especially in the beginning.\u00a0If you don\u2019t have a long work history and haven\u2019t been at least a manager, it\u2019s probable that nobody has written you a recommendation because they don\u2019t feel like they have to. If you\u2019re fresh out of university and want to ask a professor to write something about you that may be a good option. Make sure they were your teacher in a class that is relevant to where you want your career to go!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<h4>Cover Photo<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>I can\u2019t believe most people still haven\u2019t put one and have that generic color back- ground. This is your chance to show a side of you! If you consider yourself an adven- turer, you could put a photo like the one above. Or maybe an abstract design if you want to show you are creative. Really, the profile photo has regulations (see point 1) but the cover one is absolutely up to you! For your information, the recommended image resolution is 1400\u00d7425.<\/p>\n<h4>Tips<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Try to not talk politics, religion or other touchy topics.<\/li>\n<li>Follow people that inspire you. Business news, insights and discussions, so follow tons of people from that sector. Many architects post about the future of the industry, so there\u2019s that!<\/li>\n<li>When inviting people to connect with you, the default message is \u201cI\u2019d like to add you to my professional network on LinkedIn\u201d. Boooring!
