At one of the larger firms<\/strong>, one of the project managers mentioned that it\u2019s better to miss an opportunity than to sign up for a job not matching skills and personality that would waste everybody\u2019s time and effort. A common message that was brought up often was trying to avoid wasting both sides time. Make sure that you are committed to the opportunity and all the responsibilities it entails.<\/strong><\/p>\n

2. Small Firms are Small Societies and You Are A New Citizen<\/h4>\n

One of the principals at a smaller firm<\/strong> mentioned that practice offices are small societies and staff are the citizens. Research and determine the system under which they are governed and decide beforehand if you would likely prosper.<\/p>\n

3. Make Their Decision Easier<\/h4>\n

Remember that these decision makers have a plethora of decisions to make every day, you should try to make it easier for them. Public speaking skills are good to practice. Go into any new experience with an attitude to be willing and able to learn AND share your previous experiences with a team. They want candidates who want to make their work better – this benefits everyone!<\/p>\n

Have a good sense of where you want your career to go. <\/strong>This is where your 5 year plan comes into play. Make sure you understand the skillset and professional experiences that Architects five years or more ahead of you have had.<\/p>\n

5. Be Yourself and Make A Good First Impression<\/h4>\n

Portfolio work and presentation is very important because it is your first impression. Next would be how genuine and humble you are during the interview. People should be themselves, be authentic. They want a good fit and not everyone will be a good fit. Don\u2019t be afraid to ask questions. To be curious.<\/p>\n

It is always important to consider how your experience can apply to the company’s mission, and demonstrate that your contributions will be valuable, especially to smaller companies. Some key skills and traits you should emphasize is clear thinking, organization, being prepared, tailoring your work for the job you are seeking are all important points to take into consideration.. Demonstrating that you will fit in their firm.<\/p>\n
