nARCHITECTS Selected Projects

nARCHITECTS joins us for their first Featured Company profile with us and they are excited to show a wide breath of work that exemplifies their style and what areas of the industry they focus on.

History and Culture of nARCHITECTS

nARCHITECTS is a Brooklyn-based architectural studio working nationally and internationally on new buildings, transformations, and public spaces. The practice was founded to address contemporary issues in architecture through conceptually driven, socially engaging, and technologically innovative design work. They partner with public agencies, cultural institutions, developers, and private clients to design architecture that aligns with a changing world.

Co-founded in 1999 by Eric Bunge, FAIA, and Mimi Hoang, AIA, nARCHITECTS gained national attention in 2004 with MoMA PS1: Canopy in Queens, NY and soon after, Switch Building and Gallery in Manhattan.  Since these early projects, their work has continued to engage with critical issues that are transforming cultural spaces, civic buildings, and housing. With the renovation of Chicago Navy Pier (with James Corner Field Operations) and the completion of the NYS Equal Rights Heritage Center, the firm established a national profile, going on to win the 2016 American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Architecture and the 2017 New York State AIA Firm of the Year Award.

nARCHITECTS international work includes buildings in Beirut, Calgary, Hong Kong, and installations in France, and the Design Triennial in Milan. They are a team of architects and designers working collaboratively with the spirit of an atelier and the organization of an office.  Their team includes members from Vietnam, Hong Kong, Australia, Canada, Spain, Serbia, Florida, Arizona, Idaho, Ohio, Detroit, Pennsylvania, and Seattle. This unique mix of geographic and cultural backgrounds helps them to interpret the range of contexts and cultures that shape their projects.

In 2018, nARCHITECTS published the book Buildings & Almost Buildings (ACTAR), a subtle manifesto about the formal and social potential of an architecture that remains open-ended.  Order your copy here.

Maria joined nARCHITECTS in mid 2019 and then had to change over to S9 Architecture due to the pandemic hitting in March of 2020. She was happy to be able to continue using the J1 visa she obtained through the turmoil of the pandemic, and now is in Basel, Switzerland with Oppenheim Architecture. She has made the most of her time abroad and enjoys joining new teams and learning new ways to create and design architecture.
