Let’s Go Kings!

As I’m sure others have in the past and will again in the future, I was struggling to decide what my first blog entry in Los Angeles should be about. Don’t get me wrong, it was certainly not through a lack of ideas or opportunities, rather the opposite in fact; there are so many wonderful places, events and activities to write about, I didn’t know which to choose first!

That was until I was invited to the Staples Center in Downtown LA, to watch the Los Angeles Kings take on the Minnesota Wild in an NHL Ice Hockey game. As a kid growing up through the 90’s, The Mighty Ducks was always a firm favourite of mine, as a rag-tag group of kids defy all odds to become a successful minor ice hockey team. But watching an actual game of NHL hockey on TV in the UK, like most other American sports, proves difficult with games usually being screened in the very early hours of the morning. So when I was invited to watch a game in person I jumped at the chance, it was something that I just had to see and what a thrilling game it turned out to be!

The game finished 5-4 to the Kings following a close and exciting overtime period. I loved the fast-paced, physical nature of the game, along with the party-like atmosphere that filled and permeated the arena. As the game went on I quickly picked up the rules, with nearby fans helping to clear any look of confusion that appeared on my face. I also answered a longstanding query of mine: “Why do they change lineups so often in Ice Hockey?”

Watching the game in person quickly puts into perspective how fast and hard the player’s sprint and skate, a true sport of skill and athleticism. It was also great to see a footballing hero of mine was present in the crowd: Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

So to sum up my evening at the Staples Centre: an exciting game, an intense sport and a fun atmosphere. I can’t wait to watch more games in the near future.

Let’s Go, Kings!
