16th century. The Caribbean … Reckless legends of pirates, stories of greats booties, and amazing feasts … Pirate Life, Better Life.
21st century. Nowadays, and without any doubt the great XXI’s century corsairs of these turquoise and paradisiacal seas, have women´s name. Of course the new pirates are the Hurricanes! Irma, with dimensions of 700 km in diameter and 50 km of eye, sweeping the Caribbean lands with winds of a speed of 300 km/h, rarely seen previously. Category 5 hurricanes start to get small for a storm like Irma.
My dear readers, they all talk about Irma as she passes by, but no one tells you the before and aftermath. Most of the time, the least dangerous part is the storm itself. Since I decided to stay in my Brickell´s penthouse during the hurricane, I will tell you some details that really made this experience something to tell my grandchildren.
BEFORE HURRICANE:
8 days: Before the hurricane arrives, the traffic get intense, without apparent reason.
7 days: You just found out that they foresee the arrival of a hurricane. (Newer style, you think that could be an amazing experience for your life).
6 days: Everyone starts talking about the same thing. Get water, food and fuel.
5 days: You decide to follow the dough and buy water, food and fill your gas tank, with the surprise that everything is SOLD OUT.
4 days: SOLD OUT, everyone stop working and go in search of food. everything starts to get nervous. PANIC TIME.
3 days: SOLD OUT, PANIC TIME, Jams of more than 14 Hours to go away. Last moment: ¿Should I stay or should I go? The Clash * Combat rock (background song)
2 Days: I stayed. Brickell was and Mandatory evacuation zone, that means If you are in trouble nobody will come for you. Nonetheless the reason I decided to stay was because the government gave the order because the risk of flood was 100% and because the possibility of running out of water and without light was high. Fortunately, my concrete bunker and my water and food storage would have served for a military detachment.
1 Day: Wait, wait and wait. No sounds just the noise of the wind. NOBODY is in the city – Walking Dead reality. (Literally)

– HOME TIME – My amazing building resist perfectly everything with electricity and water, but it was one of the few.
AFTER HURRICANE:
Miami did not take the worst part of the hurricane as other parts of Florida but the city and its vegetation was quite devastated. But pay attention to this:
NOBODY is in the streets, NOBODY is in the city. Can someone imagine a better scenario for thieves? There is no electricity in most of the neighborhoods, no alarms, there is no one on the street stopping you, and although if someone saw you from a window and calls the police, they would not come because you are in a mandatory zone evacuation. So you can not going out home for your own security.
During the following days everything returned to normality although it took 2 weeks for the county of Miami-Dade to recover the totality of the electricity. In October the city continuee to remove fallen trees but in 6 months Miami will be the same again.
So, next time do not ruin your holidays coming in September to Miami!!! There are loose dangerous buccaneers!
