CANstruction 2017

CANstruction, charity made art

This contest consists on designing and building with food cans a sculpture related to how to fight Hunger in the world.

Hello everyone!

Last week my colleagues of GMS and I built with tuna cans Snorlax at Broofield Place in New York. Why? because we were participating in CANstruction, an annual contest between different engineering and architecture offices of New York. This contest consists on designing and building with food cans a sculpture related to how to fight Hunger in the world. There are several prizes, such as «the best structure», «the public choice», or » the more cans used». All technical and artistic inputs are helpful to create a new sculpture each year that can beat other offices’s sculpture, being volunteer work.

The sculptures are built during one evening, usually during the working days. This year everything worked out well and we finished at 10.30, but last year we left Brookfield place around 3 am in the morning! Then, there is a gala to name the winner offices and for doing some networking, which is always fun.

The exhibition will last until November 15th, when the sculptures will be deconstructed and the cans delivered to people in need of food, that is why one rule of the contest is not touching labels or not using elements that can harm the food to be used.

So hurry up and go to Brookfield Place to take a look, it is going to be doubly worth it now that the trees at the back courtyard are all lighted up and the views of the Statue of Liberty make the sight unforgettable, and very romantic!!
