«Trash picking» around the city

The most important thing here is to leave aside the prejudice about this topic, because this may not be something you would should usually do in your country of origin, just be open minded.

First of all, don´t get me wrong with this title, I am not suggesting you should go out and pick up random garbage from the streets, think more about the saying that goes : «one man’s trash is another man’s treasure».

I recently moved to a new apartment in a nice area in Philadelphia (Fairmount / Art Museum), the place was unfurnished as usual.

*As a side note, here in this city all the neighborhoods have different  trash days, once a week, were they are supposed to leave the trash on their sidewalks for it to be picked up.*

We noticed so many nice things on the streets every time we looked around the nicest / more affluent areas that we decided to furnish our apartment with things we found around. Of course we did´t get a bed frame or mattress (bedbugs!!!) , but chairs, tables, dressers, cloth racks, etc, even a beautiful piece of artwork I have right now hanging in my room. If you are good at crafts and recycling it’s a plus, getting something in bad shape and transform it by painting it can be really easy and cheap to do.

The most important thing here is to leave aside the prejudice about this topic, because this may not be something you would should usually do in your country of origin,  just be open minded and try to get the best of the situation, save money and be creative with your house decoration!
