Always waiting for the last day of exibitions to actually schedule them… This last weekend was the last chance to see a retrospective of Frank Stella’s work in de Young Museum (designed by Herzog & De Meuron).
Well, I thought I knew Frank Stella‘s art, but I realized that I only knew a small part of his work. I was associating him with his geometrical abstract paintings but he actually used many other media to express himself.
From those flat paintings often inspired by the architecture of the city, its voids and its volumes, he then started to produce sculptural paintings using different media and taking his inspiration from music, literature… The first painting on the picture is indeed named «The whiteness of the whale» and is his own interpretation of the novel Moby Dick by Melville.
It’s what is great about art exhibitions, you always discover a part of artists’ life that you never heard about before, with
somethimes a very surprising art production.
