Citibike

As discussed in previous posts, things in NYC not only happen three times faster than in any other city in the world, the also tend to be two or three times the price in Spain. So as a rule of thumb you change the euro sign for the dollar and multiply the number by 2 or 3 and that’s the equivalent. For example beer in a fancy bar 7.5$ would be 2.5eur in Madrid. A normal room in a shared apartment 300-400eur in Madrid, that will be 900-1200$ in Brooklyn. I know, 1000$ is actually 900 euros at the current moment. Good news, your salary would be normally 2 or 3 times the equivalent Spanish one.

So when you get too excited about your future salary in America remember to divide it by 2 or 3 (2.5 is a good approximation) to get a real feeling of your purchasing power once you arrive here.

The unlimited metrocard is approximately 31 usd a week and a single ride is 3usd. So is worthy to get the unlimited card if you take the subway more than ten times a week. Also, a gym membership will be between 10usd (yes, Planet Fitness!) to 60$ a month for a regular gym.

Annual metro card expense will be approximately 1500 usd and gym membership around 500 usd, total almost 2000usd a year, approx.

What if I tell you that you can easily save more than half of your commuting and fitness budget? By the title of this post you are already guessing the answer. Yes, Citibike! The Holy Grail for the Twenty-First Century Commuter. 150usd a year and you can ride as many bikes as you want 24/7.

The only thing you have to take care is to change the bike every 45 minutes on the hundreds of Citibike lots, but that’s OK, as your average ride will be 30 min. Now you own a bike almost in any corner, and NYC is a real good place to ride as the city is so flat and the cars go quite slow.

Even for me currently living in Willliamsburg, it only takes me 30 min to ride from home to work, and 30 min back without pushing it too hard. Pretty healthy and convenient. Of course on the really cold, hot or rainy days I will take the subway, but that would be less than one third of the time.
