West Indian Day Parade – Labor Day

Joining the West Indian Day Parade on my first Labor Day in the USA

After my arrival to NYC I had the immediate intention of fixing all the bureaucratic procedures, before starting my Training Program, but then I realized that I wasn’t only facing a weekend but also the American «Labor Day«.

I heard from my roommates about a Parade in Brooklyn but I had no idea what it was about, at all, even though they told me «yes, you should know, it’s the West Indian Parade«…

When I decided to go to the Parade, with nothing possible to fix on Labor Day, I just found myself in the middle of a huge crowd along all the Eastern Parkway with an amazing pure Caribbean style carnival marching through the center of the street, and tens of open-air stands on the side lane selling roasted chicken, sausages, fruit, home-made juices and all kind of stuff…

I followed the Parade almost until its end and can say, with no doubt, that it has been extremely interesting to experience it and feel how important it was for the African American community of NY.

If somebody is interested in going the next year, I strongly recommend it because of its cultural interest as well as its amazing look.
